2+2 is an ongoing collaboration between Phillip Greenlief and Jon Raskin where the two saxophonists’ pair with “like” instruments. The self-curated series features a mixture of free improvisation and graphic scores by Greenlief and Raskin. In this release the saxophones are paired with two brass players: Jen Baker (trombone) and Liz Allbee (trumpet), virtuosic talents with extended sound palettes and lightning reflexes.

Spread all over. An intensity of. An intent to. Shoulda woulda… tisket tasket. Lime juice spilled out against the horizon. A somebody says and a somebody answers. The body full of an itness, the mind scurrying all around. Silhouette pressed against the tabletop. Do go on, the voice implores. Couldn’t stop now.

And then what. And then what. What waits just underneath. Where is the mind, where does it end and yours begin. For example. By the water’s edge, so still you might miss it. Bending with the receiver to receive. When the smoke cleared you saw the sky map just as they said you would. A great knocking about, a shivering through the assembled.

The wolves are out tonight. All-points bulletin. Happy being mournful together. Something more complicated than happy. The long descent.

Phillip Greenlief and Jon Raskin formed 2 + 2 in 2003 as a container for revolving quartet formations.
We liked the pairing of like instruments, giving the ensemble an immediate character and allowing the instrument pairings to expand their conception of the possible. We've played with so many wonderful musicians in this project. ... more
